Update From Our Counselors

Peer Leaders

October was an exciting month for our Sources of Strength program! Our Peer Leaders successfully completed their training and began planning engaging activities for the fall season.

Our Peer Leaders participated in a day-long team-building workshop with a state trainer and our Wilder Adult Advisors. This cohesive effort helped strengthen our team's bonds and prepared them for upcoming events.

During Red Ribbon Week, our Peer Leaders organized interactive games during an assembly, fostering student engagement and community spirit. Additionally, they created a thought-provoking haunted house friendship display, emphasizing the importance of nurturing relationships and being there for one another.

This month, our Peer Leaders will focus on spreading gratitude throughout the school. They will work in teams to interview fellow students, exploring what they're thankful for. This activity promotes connection, empathy, and appreciation. Stay tuned! Students' creativity will be showcased on the screen in the middle and high school hallways. Watch for familiar faces and inspiring messages—you might just see someone you know pop up!

World Kindness Day

Wednesday, November 13th, is World Kindness Day. The middle and high schools will create kindness stones. This fun activity will teach students the powerful skill of using words to inspire and motivate themselves and others.

Kindness in Action at Our Elementary School

Wilder Elementary is buzzing with kindness! This month, our students are participating in a heartwarming activity that promotes compassion and community. The "Be the 'I' in Kind" initiative encourages students to embody kindness and make a positive impact. Students will decorate a cutout of a child's hand, which will be displayed on a special bulletin board. Each hand represents a unique individual, and together, they'll form a vibrant display of kindness. On their hand, students will write kind acts they plan to do for others this month. Promoting kindness empowers our students to become compassionate leaders and responsible citizens. We invite you to join us in encouraging kindness at home and in our community. Thank you for supporting our kindness initiative!

Wilder Mid/High School

First, congratulations to our High School Girls' volleyball team, which took home the Region III Championship and represented Wilder at state in Jerome. They made history, and we are so proud of them and their coaches for their commitment to the sport!

Red Ribbon Week was a success! Our counselors Maria Loera and Rosalie Sanders, along with our SROs, Officers Blanco and Obenchain, did a great job organizing the festivities, which included dress-up days, a “Cruise By” with the fire and law enforcement departments, a parent informational night, and a Fentanyl school assembly, where our students heard testimonials from families affected by the tragedy and dangers of the drug.

Our 8th-grade students had an opportunity to attend a career day at Micron/High-Tech Careers on Thursday, 11/7. They learned about Micron's history and took a tour. They also participated in some team-building activities, such as building a car out of parts in a box, followed by a competition. They also participated in a panel discussion with students and professors from BSU and workers from Micron. They got to go home with a Micron swag bag.

Check out the full lineup of Wilder's upcoming winter games on our event schedule.

Varsity Volleyball

The Wildcats opened conference play with a strong showing against the improved North Star team, taking the match in three sets with scores of 25-13, 25-23, and 25-14. Their momentum carried them to the semifinals, where they faced a determined Idaho City team with a state tournament position on the line. The girls rose to the occasion, handling Idaho City in three sets with scores of 25-19, 25-17, and 25-9.

Next came the District Championship match—a showdown against Liberty Charter, the only team to beat Wilder during the regular season. This time, the Wildcats were fully prepared and focused. The game started close, with both teams trading points, but Wilder pulled away to win the first set 25-15. The second set followed a similar script, with Wilder again coming out on top 25-15. In the third set, Wilder surged ahead on an 11-0 run fueled by Nance Ramirez’s powerful serves and Kylie Luna’s inspired defense. Emely, Natalie, Kenia, and Abby shone in both front and back row, while Nykkee’s steady serving helped extend leads. The Wildcats clinched their first-ever 2A District Championship with a final set score of 25-12.

The girls fought hard at state, giving it their all in every match. Although they didn’t take home the state title, they ended a remarkable season on a high note. It was a great season filled with teamwork, determination, and historic achievements, building momentum for the future and setting a high standard for seasons to come.

Happy Thanksgiving!

What a great time of the year to focus our attention on thankfulness.  As we enter the season of Thanksgiving, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on the many aspects of our educational community that we can be grateful for. This time of year reminds us to pause and appreciate the incredible dedication of our teachers, administrators, and support staff who work tirelessly to nurture and guide students. Their commitment to fostering a positive learning environment and supporting each student’s growth is invaluable, and we are fortunate to be surrounded by such passionate individuals who make a difference every day.

Thanksgiving also offers a chance to celebrate the unique and diverse community that each of us contributes to and benefits from. Our classrooms are filled with a variety of voices, perspectives, and experiences that enrich our understanding and deepen our empathy. As we give thanks, let us remember to express gratitude for each other and for the shared journey we are on, one that allows us to grow, learn, and become better together. I wish each of you a warm and joyful Thanksgiving season filled with reflection and gratitude.

As we continue on our journey to learn a little more about Generation Alpha students, we need to remember that there are overlapping learning approaches from Generation X learners and Generation Alpha learners. The best way for a learner to reach their fullest potential is for the academic community to engage the learning in their most optimal and engaging way of learning.

The most meaningful way for Generation Alpha to learn will be through collaborative learning experiences.

   - Peer Learning:  Collaborative learning, where students work together to solve problems and complete tasks, has been shown to enhance critical thinking and social skills. Vygotsky’s (1978) theory of social constructivism supports the idea that learning is inherently a social process and that students learn more effectively in collaborative settings.

   - Online Learning Communities:  The rise of online learning platforms and communities has further supported collaborative learning. Research by the University of Melbourne (2018) highlights how online collaboration tools enhance student engagement and learning outcomes in digital environments.

It does not matter if a learner is in a traditional or online learning setting. Students need and want to learn collaboratively.  Few students like to learn in isolation. They need connection with their peers, and that connection is centered on collaborative learning. The more we can accommodate this learning pathway, the more the learner can deepen their understanding of content and application of knowledge.

Have a wonderful and grateful Thanksgiving season!
